Arcane Engineer

As an Arcane Engineer, you have been hired to use your elemental powers to clean up an old manor full of magical contraptions. Only by repairing and reactivating these old machines can you complete your task and maybe gain some kudos from your boss in the process.

Features
& Influences

We included puzzle elements that forced the player to problem solve in order to get mana for their magic spells. Classic puzzle-adventure games like Myst and The Witness helped to inspire the types of things we wanted to build. One major focus was on making use of the environmental space and building puzzles take advantage of it. However, we also included a number of puzzles that were smaller in scale, requiring less spatial reasoning but more memory and abstract thinking to solve.

During our design process we were inspired by the cathartic level-cleanup mechanics found in Viscera Cleanup Detail. Since our game has a fantasy theme, we expanded on this idea by having the player use elemental magic to preform cleaning tasks. We also wanted to make this part of the overall progression for the game but we wanted to ensure it didn’t inhibit players most interested in solving puzzles. Therefore, there is enough debris spread around so that neat-freaks can clean to their hearts’ content but you can also leave things a bit messier to move on to the next section a bit faster.
